Commercials from Patmat film

If you are mostly stuck at home like many of us are right now, here is some extra material featuring Pat & Mat: commercials made by Patmat film in the last thirteen years. These were usually uploaded to YouTube by the original clients, then reuploaded by the operators of the now defunct Dutch website www.ajetobuurman.nl or the current owner of the Dutch licence, Trademarc (are these one and the same? I don't know).

1. Sedita (2007)

Sedita is a Slovak biscuit company. This was made in a period where the studio was dormant, this being its only project from 2004 to 2009. The animation for this commercial was done by Bedřich Glaser, who animated on the series in 2002-03 and 2009, and whose animation I'm not much a fan of. Sorry, Bedřich.

2. Tipos (2011)

Again a Slovak company, this time one that makes lottery scratchards. All of the following commercials in this post were animated by Jan Smrčka. This one was made on the Pat a Mat na venkově set.

3. tablica.pl (October 2012)

tablica.pl was a Polish e-commerce website that was in the meantime taken over by OLX. These commercials are interesting because they are made for new technology, but have a retro feel to them. This includes a recreation of the houses from 1989-1994 (this time conjoined as a duplex) and an old portrait of Pat & Mat that was used in some 1994 episodes.

4. ČPP (2011 - today)

The commercials for ČPP and Eneco are some of the funniest stuff with the characters in the last years. Most of them are funny little gems. ČPP is short for Česká podnikatelská pojišťovna, or the Czech Business Insurance Company. Their slogan is A je to pojištěno! (And it's insured!), so that's a further connection with the series. The first commercials dealt with car insurance, which meant getting a big new car for the duo. They used the venkově sets mixed with the "retro" sets I mentioned previously. Gradually, home insurance also became a topic.

These ones from 2014-2016 are my favorites. Pure, absolute demolition.

a slight change from the 2015 one at the end of this one:

Notice that Pat and Mat also have a dog in these commercials, a first for the series.
Some "making of" photos from the studio's website:

2017 saw the first appearance of the "BS" car (actually an MGB Roadster) that will become the new vehicle for the characters and the series. Watch out for a grey-pullover Mat in the balloon.

In 2018, housing was again the theme, while we were back with cars in 2019. One of these commercials also features a nostalgic element. The truck that appears in the 2019 is so similar to the one from the 1990s that I have to assume it is, in fact, the same truck.

The most recent commercial, this time more of a compilation, was posted only in January.
Hopefully, more are on their way!

Update (April 2021):

ČPP just posted a brand new animated commercial featuring our two guys, again with Jan Smrčka's ever-more-quicker animation, this time in slightly novel surroundings:

5. Eneco (2016, 2018)

This article about the commercials says: "Children's heroes get to work with Toon, Eneco's smart thermostat. In collaboration with advertising agency Dawn, Eneco has developed a campaign for Toon, the smart thermostat devised by the energy company. The idea behind choosing Buurman and Buurman is that if even the clumsiest handymen can operate, understand and use Toon, all Dutch people can." In 2018, another couple of commercials were made, this time for a waste checker. Both sets of commercials utilise the 2002-04 set.

6. Lidl (2018?)

Somewhere around 2018 an ad for Lidl was produced. In the ad, Buurman en Buurman watch their miserable end in Okap and try to do something about it. Since I can't link it from the original site, here's the ad from YouTube:

Phew, that was hard to put together, especially the Vimeo links, but I wanted to include links to the original creators of the ads. I hope I haven't missed any of the commercials. Tell me how much you enjoyed them. As I've said, I love some of these and I wish the newest episodes were closer in style to them!

  1. You forgot about ads in the Merkur store. Unless it was a deliberate idea.

    1. I left those ones out on purpose. Patmat only did one of them and it was much earlier, in 2001 or 2002.

  2. There was even another version of Lidl's ad

    1. Cool. I see that the animation is the same. The ad is clever because you can put in any number of short clips for whatever Lidl wants to promote.

    1. Well, how could have I forgotten it when it only came out today? :) Anyway, it is different from the 20th anniversary commercial only in the numbers on the cake and the newspaper (25 instead of 20). They either filmed these concurrently or altered the older commercial.

  4. Now the PatMat Studio has confirmed the title of the new season, Pat a Mat kutí in English, called Pat & Mat Adventures.

  5. The references are great in these, loved the truck and the gray Mat! Also nice to see the origin of the dog that appears in some of those fan-made Pat & Mat episodes!

  6. I find the blogspots of jetology very interesting, this one was the most interesting to me, mainly for the reason of the comeback of the truck from the episode "The Convertible", I was wondering, would the classic convertible (The one they owned from episode 7 "Garage" to "Pat & Mat return") ever have the possibility to come back?

    1. Thanks, Pjoter! This post was very difficult to compile. I think the studio doesn't have the car anymore. I've noticed that it was displayed here and there, so maybe it was retired for good. It can be seen, for instance, on photos from this exhibition from 2017: https://www.novinky.cz/vase-zpravy/clanek/ve-zlatem-jablku-se-zabydleli-pat-a-mat-312291

    2. Thank you for the reply, Marin. It would be nice to see it once more I suppose, but, I guess that it wouldn't fit into the time set that Pat & Mat is in now. Have a nice day.

    3. Oh yes, it would be nice to see it again, especially as some old props like the drill are still actively used. I think there's comedic potential in the fact that Pat and Mat have the car they do now (a classic MG) as you have to wonder how did they obtain it and how have they not broken it yet. You're welcome, have a nice day. :)

  10. Can you please make blog about VHS? Like from 1990 to 2006. I have all of them so it wouldn't be a problem to send you the covers and the VHS tapes themselves.
